ABSTRACT

BAADERMEINHOF-GRUPPE A left-wing group which was part of the ROTE-ARMEE-FRAKTION (RAF) that resorted to terrorism after the student protests of 196.. The leaders were Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Ulrike Meinhof, and the group carried out bomb attacks and bank robberies before the three leaders were arrested in 1972. They were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1977 after longdrawn-out trials that were accompanied by further terrorist activity and commanded considerable publicity. Meinhof had meanwhile committed suicide in prison (Stuttgart-Stammheim) in 1976, and the deaths of Baader and Ensslin immediately following the RAF hijack of a Lufthansa jet to Mogadishu (Somalia) in October 1977 were also attributed to suicide by the authorities.
