ABSTRACT

I had an opportunity to teach a course on ‘Sexual Diversity’ at The City University of Hong Kong from 2007–2009. In this chapter, I will share in detail how I prepared myself to teach this subject. I believe that it is important for a teacher to understand him/herself. Understanding our own experiences, inner feelings and beliefs can help us understand what we teach and how our students learn (Eng, 2005). Therefore, in order to prepare myself and equip myself to be an effective teacher, I designed a plan of action to ‘understand myself’ and implemented it 5 years ago when I was working on my Master in Social Work (MSW) program at York University in Canada.
