Economic planners, for instance, not infrequently lack a knowledge of the structure and norms of the community for which they plan. Here the provision of knowledge by anthropologists may be a very important component of the developmental process – though so far as a rule such provision has been conspicuously absent ( Firth, 1970: 23).
