ABSTRACT

When a child has communication difficulties, it is usually the specific areas of difficulty that are immediately apparent and the impact that they are having upon learning. By analysing the child’s speech and language, you can provide a basis for planning support and intervention in the school situation. It is also valuable to recognise some of the labels given to the various disorders, to understand the origin of the difficulties and the associated features that may be present. I have summarised some of the disorders that you may encounter in a mainstream classroom. (Further terminology is explained in the Glossary at the end of the book.)
