ABSTRACT
Although the primary and most obvious function of indigo is for textile dyeing, it has been used in different cultures, not least the Islamic lands, for a host of subsidiary purposes, ranging from medicine and calligraphy to staining the beard. Before looking at these diverse uses it is worth examining just what indigo has meant to the Arabs.
