Northern and Southern Dynasties

Modern research has come some distance towards a ‘synthetic’ explanation of the formation of Chinese society from the Han Dynasty onwards. An outline of its conclusions, for the period now under consideration, would be somewhat as follows ⁽¹⁾ .
