ABSTRACT

The first representative of the newer industries is the Census group ‘Engineering, not marine or electrical’. It is a less extreme example than the other two which will be considered, because it was already quite an important industry, both in the country and in London, in the mid-nineteenth century. Nevertheless the rate of growth has been very high. Table 19 makes this clear. Over the period 1861-1951, therefore, the rate of increase of the labour force was no less than 23 per cent per annum in the whole country and 24 per cent per annum in London. It seems unlikely that these figures are exaggerated by deficiencies in the comparison; rather the reverse, because the 1861 figures include large numbers of boiler-makers, many of whom should doubtless be included in marine engineering under the 1951 classification.
