ABSTRACT

O n the practical level everything was soon ar~angetl. Joseph's sister Iiannah came through one of tliose connecting doors from his mother's house to live with him and look after 'Lilley'. She was a devoted aunt, and the baby grew and flourished under her care. Even so his I~ouse must havc bee11 a lonely place for the young widower, arid for several ycars it was his habit to stay at thc Pavcment shop until very late it1 the evening. All his personal letters in thesc years are Ilracled '28 T h e Pavement'. I-Ie must liave sat writing them in the counting-Ilouse, with the darkened empty shop beyond, until at last he could no longer put off going home to those rooms in Doo~l~anl .
