ABSTRACT

Most teachers would say that the behaviour of the students in their lessons is the key element to both students' ability to learn and their own professional satisfaction. However, whilst it is recognised that the individual skills of the teacher will be a major influence, there is increasing recognition that the wider dimensions of the child's family and community life have to be taken into consideration when trying to understand and address students' behaviour. In this chapter we will outline a model that helps towards an appreciation of how the interactions of home and school affect children's lives and offer some ideas about ways to create change.
