ABSTRACT

This case study has been taken from a report on five sites of effective special education practice for Maori (Berryman, Glynn, Walker, Reweti, O'Brien, Boasa-Dean, Langdon & Weiss, 2002). It describes an intervention that took place in a small decile 1 (low socioeconomic status) school in Hastings, New Zealand in 2001. The report includes comments from some of those most closely associated with the intervention that were recorded by the researchers as the research progressed. This school used the 'Eliminating Violence' (EV) programme developed by the Specialist Education Services (now known as Group Special Education within the Ministry of Education) as a means of reducing the incidence of undesirable student behaviours.
