ABSTRACT

Broadly we can distinguish between three kinds of explanations sometimes advanced for the things we do. Since time immemorial people have given credit or discredit to gods or demons that have come, often unbidden, into their lives and got them to do creditable or discreditable things. Others have rejected such supernatural explanations and viewed their actions as a consequence of the kind of biological organism they are or (through evolution) have become. Still others have seen their behaviour as a response to the environment, physical, social and cultural, in which they live and the ways in which the environment has operated upon them to condition them to act the way they do.
