ABSTRACT
Abraham Johannes (or as he always called himself, A. J.) Muste was the prophetic spokesperson of the peace movement in the United States from the mid-1930s until his death in 1967. He walked his talk: a famous photograph showed A. J., then aged seventy-four, climbing the fence of the Mead Missile Base in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1959 to protest United States missile policy. As a former labor movement organizer and Marxist, A. J. was also concerned to transform the whole of society. He believed in revolutionary nonviolence, and has been called a forerunner of Liberation Theology.
