ABSTRACT

When your child's reading skills are below average, he needs books that are simple to read, but he doesn't want ‘baby books’. He wants books that interest children of his age. For example, a ten year old may only have the reading ability (known as the Reading Age) of an average seven year old, but he will want books that interest ten year olds. It is this gap between reading ability and interest that makes it difficult for these children to choose books from ordinary bookshops. In the first part of the list below, which is mostly made up of sets of books my colleagues and I have used and liked, I have indicated the Reading Age and the Interest Level of the books.
