ABSTRACT

The fields of employment open to British shipping in 1793 may be grouped under five main heads:

The foreign trade proper of Great Britain.

The trade between Great Britain and Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man; then included in the returns of “Foreign Trade,” but sometimes separately referred to as the “Foreign Coasting Trade.”

The trade of Ireland with countries other than Great Britain.

Cross-trades between ports (British or foreign) outside the British Isles.

The coastal and local traffic of Great Britain and the British Possessions.
