Chapter 25 Developing pupils’ skills in self-assessment in the primary classroom R uth D an n

If assessment is to be meaningful for pupils they need to be involved in the process. If teachers and teaching assistants want to plan to support children’s learning they need to know what pupils think about their own learning. Ruth Dann, a lecturer at Keele University, argues that pupil self-assessment should be an essential component in formative assessment and one that will provide valuable insights into children’s thinking and understanding and what they consider to be important about their learning.
