ABSTRACT

The area of investigating and analysing the mass media, and issues related to it, is dealt with throughout this book. In each chapter, 1 to 5, there are opportunities within activities to use the media both as a source of information and to investigate attitudes, opinions, values and beliefs about a range of citizenship issues, including human rights, British identity, crime, justice, environmental concerns, ethical dilemmas, power, politics, and so on. The focus in this chapter, therefore, is on discrete activities that can be used to teach pupils about the nature of information within a variety of media, the power of information and restrictions on freedom of information and, last but not least, the importance of being critical thinkers in relation to the mass media.
