ABSTRACT

The central focus of this work has been on the transnationalization of activism witnessed the world over in recent decades, which della Porta and Tarrow have called “the most dramatic change we see in the world of contentious politics.” Specifically it has addressed the questions of why and how this shift to the global is taking place, what are the compositions and characters of these emerging activist networks, and what role the WSF has played in this transnationalizing process. The WSF slogan of “Another World Is Possible” reflects activists' collective desire to move beyond a neoliberal global order which is blamed for rising levels of poverty, inequality, environmental destruction, conflicts, corporate takeover of land and loss of the commons, and disillusionment with democratic institutions.
