ABSTRACT
MAIN clauses make sense on their own and are similar to simple sentences.
SUBORDINATE clauses (embedded clauses) add information to the main sentence and are therefore classified according to their functions: noun, adjectival, adverbial. They cannot stand as a sentence on their own.
