ABSTRACT

Finding what is wrong is not easy when there are lots of young children milling about and especially in the nursery when the children can mainly choose what they want to do. Children also do things differently on different occasions depending on whether they are interested or tired or whether they have newly grasped the way to carry out a task. So assessments vary because of these factors but also because of the different levels of experience and expertise of the assessors. In nurseries and schools it is a good idea to have two observers making independent assessments and then discussing the fi ndings in a group meeting.
