Compiling an assessment profi le is the fi rst step towards helping children with problems, and the next is designing a programme to help the particular diffi culties each child displays. Sugden and Henderson (1994) explain:

Accurate assessment and successful management go hand in hand. Without a detailed assessment, an intervention programme cannot be geared to the individual needs of the child. Without a well formulated intervention programme, a detailed assessment is only of limited value.
