ABSTRACT

The scene is a clearing in the woods near John's and Barbara's cabin. John has been chopping wood. He is hacking away awkwardly at a large log, and it is evident that this work is something which he is not used to. After several clumsy strokes, he sets the axe down and wipes his forehead. He stands a moment, angry with himself, but his attention is soon diverted by the sounds of the wood. He stretches, then begins to dance, but recalls himself and lies down along the log. Behind him the Fair Witch appears. She dances over to him and gets his attention, and he begins to dance with her. The Dark Witch comes in, and he joins them in a gay free dance which recalls the life he left to become human. Suddenly Barbara is heard calling offstage.
