ABSTRACT
Early factory machines were expensive and clumsy, but easy enough for a woman to work once they got started. Moreover, they could go on without stopping as long as workers could be found to tend and clean them. For cleaning, the smaller the worker the more easily he could get under the machines. So it came about that women and children were employed in great numbers, though men were still needed as ‘overlookers’, and for skilled, finer spinning.
