ABSTRACT

In this chapter the problem of gender and science education is considered. First, we will discuss how the problem is perceived from different stances, our own perspective and our own ‘scene’ in Norway. Second, we will discuss possible theoretical frameworks for an analysis of the issues. We will emphasize the need for a theory that goes beyond simple thinking in terms of cause and effect, and will elaborate the concept of gender culture as a tool for understanding the complexity of the issues. Next, we refer to and discuss empirical evidence that throws some light on the same issues and how this relates to our theoretical base. Finally, we discuss possible practical consequences that may be drawn from what has been said earlier.
