ABSTRACT
Transportation and communication have been essential factors throughout the development of the American economy. The impossibility of rapid contact and transport retarded expansion, and contributed to disunity and localism in our early history. The development of new facilities in the early nineteenth century greatly increased geographic expansion and made possible agricultural and industrial growth.
