ABSTRACT
Before the Revolution the American population had not moved far beyond the Appalachian barrier, but with the elimination of the French menace and the English restrictions, and the improvement of transportation, the movement westward was accelerated. The acquisition and conquest of wild lands in the interior and western part of the continent were an outstanding force in the growth of the American economy and the shaping of American character.
