ABSTRACT
A national system of transportation and means of rapid communication were indispensable to the industrialization of the United States. The half century after the Civil War witnessed a remarkable growth of our railroad network; in the twentieth century, transportation was further revolutionized by the development of the automobile and the airplane. In communication also, the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw the significant progress of telegraphy and the introduction of telephony and wireless.
