ABSTRACT
Chemicals from Coal COAL-TAR is a by-product left over after making coke and gas from coal. Until the mid-nineteenth century it had been considered a waste-product useful for little else but the caulking of ships. The German organic chemists turned to it as the likeliest source of raw materials for the synthetic carbon compounds they were trying to develop.
