ABSTRACT

Objects of reference are objects invested with a special meaning and used for communication. They can assist memory and aid understanding. The object may be a sign that is part of the event for which it stands, for example a coat for ‘going out’. It may relate to the thing for which it stands by physical resemblance, for example, a cup for ‘drink’. An object of reference may relate to what it stands for by some arbitrary link such as a three dimensional shape for ‘begin’.
