ABSTRACT

Health factors have often received inadequate attention during the formulation of development policies and planning of projects. In particular, the health component ofElA is weak and needs to be strengthened through the use of environmental health impact assessment (EHIA). This aims first to identify and predict the impacts of a development on environmental parameters that have a strong health significance, in other words environmental health factors. Then, using this and other information from epidemiological, toxicological and risk assessment studies, an attempt is made to identify, predict and evaluate potential changes in health which may be caused by a particular development proposal.
