ABSTRACT
The thalidomide disaster in the early 1960s stimulated the development of modern toxicology. Until that time toxicology was primarily concerned with medicinal products, poisons and poisonings. It has now come to signify the science of poisons, or the study of the adverse effects of chemicals on living tissues.
