ABSTRACT

Having come this far, I hope I have convinced you that Taiwan’s politics are worth studying. The innovation and diversity in Taiwanese politics and sheer pace of political change on the island never cease to amaze me. Every morning, the fi rst thing I look forward to is checking for the most recent political developments on the online newspapers and political blogs. This fascination with Taiwanese politics means that Mondays are my favourite day of the week. Where possible, I attempt to combine family holidays with fi eldwork in Taiwan. Listening to Taiwanese taxi drivers’ lectures on politics, interviewing politicians, watching the highly partisan talk shows and TV ads and attending election rallies are just a few of the highlights of any fi eldwork trip to Taiwan. I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed if you visit Taiwan during a major election campaign.
