ABSTRACT
ABOVE this great army of labourers, ranging from the girl in the cotton mill to the governess in her lonely schoolroom, were the ladies of England, the idle women. In an age when women of the lower ranks were notoriously overworked, not only the aristocracy but both the upper and the lower middle classes protected the females of their households from any kind of useful employment.
