ABSTRACT

The importance of health and safety, both for ancillary staff and for the children they work with, must never be forgotten in developing any programme of support. Students with medical problems or physical disabilities can be vulnerable, not only in the playground and moving around the school building, but also in a busy classroom. A balance between safety and independence can be difficult to achieve and will require considerable thought and planning from the whole-school team. The involvement of the parents and the pupil is also vital if the needs of all concerned are to be addressed.
