ABSTRACT
Effective argumentation is essential for resolving bioethics issues. This chapter examines how moot court, a tool used in legal education, can bolster students’ capacity to effectively argue in a bioethics context. This chapter fi rst sets forth a sample moot court problem and corresponding oral argument text that can be used to teach a bioethics issue. The chapter then identifi es challenges to teaching effective argumentation in bioethics and explains how and why moot court augments students’ capacity to identify competing ethical and moral visions, and to objectively evaluate various viewpoints in bioethics decision-making. The chapter concludes with identifying some possible limitations to the use of moot court in academic settings other than law school, and provides solutions to overcome the limitations.
