ABSTRACT

Digital video cameras with high quality playback and stills are a very rare resource in schools but may have a great potential for developing self-awareness of social skills. This is termed ‘social review' by Carol Gray (1995), who attempted to assess informally the understanding and perceptions of a videotaped social situation by a learner who is able to communicate verbally or with a communication aid. In social review, the teacher describes objectively what is happening, and then the learner's viewpoint of what is happening is solicited and explored. Bieber (1994) refers to the exploration of social mistakes as social autopsies where the learner engages in a discussion with an adult of what went wrong, the aim being to develop a plan to overcome the problem which may be written down or depicted in symbols or pictures.
