ABSTRACT

A drama education which begins with play may eventually include all the elements of theatre. Like all the arts, drama helps us to make sense of the world. (Arts Council, 1992) This chapter includes:

• a consideration of the place of theatre arts in the primary curriculum • a suggested relationship between theatre arts and the rest of the curriculum • introductory guidelines on theatre skills and crafts • suggested ways of working with theatre professionals • an outline of desired critical responses • a glossary of theatre terms for children to use.
