ABSTRACT

In previous chapters we have introduced you to some people we got to know well in the course of our research: teachers, parents and able children, achievers and under-achievers. None of these were paragons of virtue. Like all of us they were struggling to conduct their lives as best they knew how in diverse and often difficult circumstances. In Chapter 2 the literature and theories about intelligence were detailed, and in Chapter 3 we set the national scene which formed the background to these lives. In subsequent chapters more details were provided about particular school and family situations and personal responses to them. In this chapter we will draw these threads together, providing a general overview of results and suggestions deriving from our work, paying attention to the people involved in the situation, firstly from our perspective and lastly presenting their viewpoints.
