ABSTRACT

The SATs assessment survey in mathematics by OFSTED (1996) showed that nnder two thirds of pupils achieved level 4 in the National Curriculum at the age of eleven. A new target of 75 per cent was set for this to be reached by the year 2002. There was an improvement in 1997 bringing the level up to 68 per cent. The strong initial improvement was probably accounted for by the tests bedding down and teachers learning to teach to them.
