ABSTRACT

In education, motivation is the term we use to explain why one pupil persists at a task, while another gives in at the first obstacle; why one pupil needs little direction and supervision while a peer needs constant reminders; why one pupil arrives with the correct equipment for a lesson while another rarely comes equipped; why one pupil volunteers for extra activities while another can hardly wait to get out of the classroom; why one pupil with less ability achieves higher grades than another of higher ability. The definition of the term motivation, for teachers, is the degree of effort, interest and involvement that a pupil has with a task.
