ABSTRACT

The post-war period saw a great expansion of all AE (from a low base of course). Within this experience two organisational changes were of profound importance for the WEA: the very rapid growth of LEA provision following the 1944 Education Act; and the establishment of University Extramural Departments (or Departments of Adult Education as most later became known), with the consequence of a distancing of the hitherto close relationship between the WEA and the universities.
