ABSTRACT

While the ideas of dominant culture and conscious action were discussed in earlier chapters, it is necessary to continue to synthesize these ideas in exploring the way the person emerges through the process of learning in society. Only after we have explicated these concepts will we be able to analyze in depth some of the existential problems that surround the learning process. Thus this chapter first explores the ideas of consciousness and false consciousness, then relates them to interest and need, and finally discusses Freire’s understanding of conscientization.
