ABSTRACT
The Japanese academic profession is financially viable, and salaries relative to other sectors in the labor market have remained competitive over the last 30 years. But other elements—including work time, obtaining academic employment, and job stability—have gotten worse. So, the attractiveness of the academic profession has declined. This also means that salaries are not internationally competitive, especially for attracting worldwide leading scholars.
