ABSTRACT

Since the pupils who have had the least success at reading are often boys, and since few secondary teachers have anything beyond the foggiest notion about how to teach reading other than to bring pupils and books into close proximity, the wonder is that there are so many successes rather than that there are such low standards of attainment.
