ABSTRACT

Reading in the English department - Key Stage 3 All English departments in secondary schools are concerned with improving the reading attainment of their pupils, yet what 'reading' means is only, if ever, explored superficially. 'Readers' are expected, by their teachers, to make progress and to develop as a result of their various reading experiences, but these expectations are not securely underwritten by clear notions of what constitutes real development by most English teams. The devices and mechanisms employed to measure how well pupils can 'read', where they exist, are unrefined, clumsy and limited.
