ABSTRACT
This chapter is concerned with describing the contribution that the Open University is making to higher educational opportunities for women in this country. It argues that this is a significant contribution, with illustration from University statistics and survey findings. It begins, though, by outlining the background against which these statistics must be assessed: the early learning experiences of boys and girls and their achievements in school; and the differential opportunities of men and women in post-school education.
