ABSTRACT

The syndrome of autism has been the subject of much study in recent years. Research in the area, as cited by DeMyer, Hingtgen, and Jackson (1981), has led to the now generally accepted position that infantile autism is a type of developmental disorder accompanied by severe and, to a large extent, permanent intellectual/behavioral disorders. Cognitive deficits (e.g., perceptual and language behaviors) appear central to the autism syndrome; however, the specific underlying neurophysiological mechanism(s) controlling this unique disorder are unknown.
