ABSTRACT

This book has been written as a practical aid to help pupils, their parents and mainstream teachers to overcome some of the barriers dyslexia can present in the mainstream English classroom. It is not intended to be an academic reference book. Our ideas are based on real day-to-day teaching experience and the way we believe dyslexic learners should be supported in the secondary school. We are concerned with the whole child and therefore we have stressed throughout the book ways in which dyslexic pupils can become confident and happy learners. Our approaches and methods ensure that the anxieties that are sometimes experienced when teaching dyslexic learners for the first time in the mainstream English classroom can be allayed. We aim to provide the confidence to 'have a go' based on what has worked for us. Once staff have taught pupils with dyslexia they see the pupils' strengths and weaknesses for themselves.
