Many young Japanese were sent by the Japanese authorities to study abroad. The vast majority of these were men and there were very few Japanese women in foreign countries with whom they could consort. They inevitably developed attractions to foreign women and in a number of cases this led to marriages between Japanese and residents in the countries where they were studying.
