ABSTRACT

Magazine editing is not just about content, nor even about content and design, but about producing an experience for the reader in which the physical object plays an important role. Magazines are, typically, luxury items, and high standards are expected. The gloss of a fashion magazine, the flourescent colours of a gossip magazine, and the smell and weight of an independent music publication – or even a specialist business newsletter – are key parts of the reader's experience. Creating this reader experience can be just as creative an endeavour as maintaining editorial or design standards.
