ABSTRACT

It is clear that the techniques, discussed in the previous chapters are extremely useful for the description of all kinds of acoustical, electrical and other systems that can be found between the sound signal source and the hearing organ. We could however ask ourselves whether they could also be used for the description of the source and hearing organ themselves. A partial answer to that question (that was also asked at the end of chapter one) has already been given: in section 7.3 we have seen that by considering the vocal organ a linear system a good and effective method for efficiently coding natural speech and generating synthetic speech could be developed: Linear Predictive Coding. In this final chapter we will check to which extent a similar approach is possible to the hearing organ.
